They might be cleared but not happy with the smell in the water. I've personally unhooked from their line and I'm back on my well but all my neighbors are complaining and they are not happy.
Personally, I wouldn't drink anything from that system for at least a couple months, and I wouldn't eat in a restaurant that uses that water for that period of time either.
West Virginia American Water Co. Is giving a 1000 gallon credit to all it customers and the Putnam PSD is also giving the same credit for waste water. At this time, I'm not sure if I will ever hook back up to their line. I'm going to have my well water tested just to see what all is in it and I'll make a decision. I did that back in the 80's and it was declared safe for drinking but who knows what may have changed since then. I feel really bad for those that don't have that option.
In terms of flushing water systems, it would make sense to at least inspect all seals, gaskets and screens. To be honest, I think all of those mentioned should be replaced.
Also, the WV American Water Company needs to replace their charcoal based filters more than once during the next several months.

My thoughts exactly, they need to replace anything associated with the filtering process. The total system needs systematically overhauled in the coming weeks.

I lived for many years in Connecticut, and most of that state has well water and septic systems in spite of its affluence. It's like they are 50 years behind times. I would think you need to test your well for septic germs. We had to do that every year in Connecticut, and if there were any traces the well required treatment.
I was in Krogers tonight. My favorite ham and egg salads are made by Gunnoes in Charleston. I picked up my usual containers, and after I got home I asked myself... hummm. I wonder if they washed their vats with that water before they made this stuff? Now I'm half afraid to eat it.
