As part of a series on second home locations, USA Today has a feature on the Snowshoe Resort in Pocahontas County. Some quotes from the article...

"If it goes above 80 degrees here in the summer, people complain," says Michael Hughes, a broker with REMAX Snowshoe.

Unlike most year-round destination ski resorts, real estate prices are affordable, with availability under $100,000.

Two historic golf resorts, the Homestead and the Greenbrier, are 45 minutes away, and the resort has its own course.

(45 minutes to the Greenbrier sounds awfully optimistic, at least for ground transportation.)

That was a nice article snorpus. Thanks for sharing. I absolutely love Snowshoe and make a point to go there several times a year. I can make it in around four hours from the Beltway so it's great for weekend ski trips in the winter. I've also gone to the Chili Cookoff before but I didn't make it this year.

I have to say I also love the Canaan Valley area too. Which do you guys think is better as far as an all around resort type experience. I personally like the skiing and mountaintop village atmosphere at Snowshoe, it makes for a great experience. However when it comes to being surrounded by many different things to see and do I think Canaan Valley wins. Blackwater Falls and Dolly Sods are probably two of my favorite things to see in West Virginia. Sorry to ramble just enjoyed the article.

Many properties at Canaan are in a 'fire sale mode...discounted over $100 k from the asking price.

a friend bought a lot to build on and the neighbor said, "If I knew you were looking, I would have sold you my place." One thing led to another and the parcel was bigger...

Price ended up being $130K and it was a 3 year old house...

I said, "What are you going to do with that building lot? (as I wanted it)
The friend said..."Have you build me a home and then sell it...if I do that twice my home will be free."

Here we go again...
