I went once several years ago and we drove for hours trying to find parking and went home without seeing a thing. If you go, either go really early or use public transit. On another note, this Sunday in Stamford they do a Thanksgiving parade with giant balloons that were more recognizable to my 2 year olds than the one's in the Macy's parade. They had at least 7 Sesame Street characters alone! It's a great parade and you might want to that also.
A couple of years ago we did this with our kids. We took the train in and actually spent more of the day at the Natural History museum (the subway stops right at the museum at 81st), then went out to the floats, because there wasn't much to see earlier in the day (they blow them up later in the afternoon). The only way I would have driven in would have been to use a parking garage. This is an exhausting day as it is - especially with kids. I'm glad we didn't have to deal with parking on top of it, and was thankful to get on the train and relax when it was all done.
When I said we were looking for parking, I meant in a garage rather than on the street and everything was completely filled up. We went a few hours before it was scheduled to happen. It was crazy!
Took my kids last year (they were 3 and 6), and it is super cool but very crowded and exhausting. Strollers are a good idea for getting to the area, but once you're in the line they really can't see much sitting down, so plan to put small ones on shoulders. The line moves very slowly and you're kind of stuck once you're in it, but it's really an awesome experience. Bring good jackets, snacks, a camera and patience for crowds.
The Stamford parade is fun. A lot of the balloons are older. Your kids might not know Rocky and Bullwinkle, but no problem parking or getting right up front.
actually the just started a love affair with rocky and bullwinkle via boomerang on demand! they'd love to see them in giant-sized balloons!
