Hi,

We are considering moving to Croton and don't know too much about the area. People who are familiar with it: are there many young families who live there? We are in our early and mid30s, have a 2 year old, and are looking to see if this town would be a good match for us. Thanks!

Heh, you'll fit right in if you guys are in your 30s with a two year old and consider yourselves a "young family." The average first birth age in the US is ~25. In Croton, more people than average will have gone to grad school, saved up money, waited to get married and such, so yeah it will be fine for you. There's very little point in living in Croton without a family, so that dictates the vibe there. Check out the age distribution data for Croton half way down this page. You guys are maybe a tad on the low side, but that's probably because many people who live in NYC or elsewhere with crappy schools wait until their kid is 4 or 5 to move, so in 3 years, all your peers will be jumping ship to the suburbs with good schools.

Haha, thanks for pointing out that we are actually old! I just meant that we've got a young child and are thinking of having more. We've lived in manhattan/brooklyn for a long time. Are there alot of people who move to Croton from Brooklyn?

I don't know about Brooklyn specifically, but the NYC'ers who move to a place like Croton are mostly white people with white collar jobs, looking to grow their families in a safer, greener, more educationally oriented environment. I'm pretty sure that demographic is fairly strong in parts of Brooklyn these days. You will most definitely be part of the herd if you fit that description. Even if you don't, it still may be OK for your needs, depending on your personal priorities.

Croton is busting at the seams with families just like yours. It's a sweet little town. So is Ossining. So is Pleasantville. This part of Westchester is very beautiful, very private, great schools and very convenient. It's amazing that you can live here, not see or hear your neighbor, but yet be within a three-minute drive to a grocery store in many places. And it's so dang kid friendly. And family friendly. I cannot imagine living in the city again after being here. So beautiful. But the commute sucks. It really does.
