We are looking to relocate to NY or CT from FL and are interested in hearing what towns you all would recommend.

We want to live someplace where the majority of people are like minded. We are earth conscious, liberal, and not affiliated with any religions. Access to holistic health practitioners, organic farms, farmers markets, CSAs. We want to live among people who value family, arts and experience over materialistic goals. We would be starting over so we are looking for a welcoming place where it is easy to make friends with other young families. We have 2 very young children (infant + toddler) so access to alternative schooling that is affordable would need to be considered as well.

We are very much in the minority where we are now and would like to change that.

Ideally it would be within 2 or so hours of NYC and Fairfield County CT since that is where our families are located.

New Paltz has been mentioned by friends. We would like feedback about that area and any other suggestions that fit our description as well. Thanks so much!

I'd look into these hudson valley towns, all of which I think have the vibe and amenities that you're looking for:

Peekskill
Beacon
Hudson
New Paltz
Newburgh

Add the following towns in the Kingston area to the list: Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Saugerties. All with young families and a robust local food culture. Red Hook is heavily influenced by the presence of Bard College. Rhinebeck has a handful of holistic docs, as does nearby Hyde Park. Saugerties is the most affordable.

In CT look into Woodbury, New Milford, and Litchfield - however, note that a lot of western CT is demographically on the old side, so your experience in meeting young families may vary. New Milford is probably your best bet from that perspective. Woodbury has great alternative preschool options and there's a relatively affordable Montessori school in nearby Washington.

Also consider Millerton and Woodstock, NY and Kent, CT.
