Hi, I am just curious to know whether North Carolina has quaint, historical mountain towns. I love how vibrant their falls and springs are, but I would also like a taste of winter if possible. Having traveled extensively throughout Tennessee, I know how beautiful the Smokey Mountains are, and am wondering if there are any towns in that region with great schools, a robust middle class (good economy), distinct character, family-oriented activities, and access to a bigger city (I'm guessing Asheville). Any and all feedback is appreciated! Thanks.

"Great" schools is very subjective, and may be hard to find, depending on how you define it. A robust middle class may also be hard to find. The mountain economy, especially in the small towns, is often very service oriented, and western NC has a large retirement population. You might want to look into Brevard, Black Mountain, Waynesville and Sylva.

Thanks, everyone! And I just noticed a spelling error I made : "Smoky," not "Smokey." I will look into all of these!

I've never seen it spelled "Smokys". Always Smokies.

I think you can find most of those things, but "robust economy" is a little tricky. Most of the mountain economies, including Asheville, are tourist-based.
