I bought glasses for the eclipse from Amazon some weeks ago and yesterday got an email from them that they're counterfeit along with a warning not to use them. The story is in the news too. Refunds are being made.

Since we're in/close to totality, and many here probably bought glasses, I thought I'd post here as a heads up to all. I suppose that you don't have to have bought from Amazon to get counterfeit ones that may cause damage. The ones I bought sure seemed to have all the boxes checked for what they said to look for.

I hope real glasses are still available for all.

Here's were to find reputable vendors, but some are sold out already: https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/solar-filters

edited to add: even on the link above where nasa says certain vendors are sold out; I found when you go to the sites without a "sold out" notation, many are back-ordered/wait-listed/sold out too. So if you have any doubts, act fast (think shipping times too).

We picked some up at the Hendersonville visitor's center for $3 a piece. They meet the requirements.

thanks for the links

I ordered Rainbow Symphony (made in USA) glasses months ago directly from Amazon (I'm in the path of totality in the Upstate - live just south of downtown Greenville) - haven't rec'd any correspondence from Amazon - I've checked all of the glasses for defects, tears, blemishes, etc - all perfect - also, each had the ISO 12312-2 stamp - with this, one can technically wear indefinitely with no time limit - I've tested each pair and I can see a dim sun disk (haven't seen any sunspots)

I have an estimated 2 min 12 sec of totality here - hoping for peaks of sunshine!

One story in the news is about a woman who bought 500 glasses for her school, and got the email from Amazon stating that they may be counterfeit.

I don't know about anybody else, but I would not trust my eye sight to a 40 cent pair of cardboard glasses. I'm just going to wait until the sun completely disappears, before I look at it.

I did try looking for some eye protection to watch the eclipse. But I didn't find anything I was comfortable with buying. Now I think it's too late anyway, and I'm fine with that.

I think that Amazon may have gone overboard. I know of at least one case, where the glasses were most likely NOT counterfeit, and the person still got the refund and the warning.

I asked Amazon for a refund for the sets where I could not verify the ISO certification. One of the sets I bought, I was able to verify. However, someone else got refunded for the same glasses, along with getting the same warning from Amazon.
So I highly suspect Amazon has just gone overboard.

I contacted American Paper Optics, and they verified the glasses that I had ordered on Amazon.
They said that they do have reputable sellers on Amazon.

A few others responded, to the same discussion on their facebook page, indicating having the glasses that match the good ones, yet still getting refunds and warnings from Amazon.

^You may be right. But I'm not willing to risk my retinas, so I re-bought from a reputable supplier listed on NASA's site Sunday morning, and by the evening, had a tracking notice. Should work.
