Are there any places in Western North Carolina or Eastern Tennessee which meet the following requirements? In my initial research I have not been able to identify anything yet but I would greatly appreciate feedback from those here:
  • population between 8k and 40k
  • average annual snowfall greater than or equal to 30in / year
  • political environment which is predominantly right leaning, independent or apolitical (in general non-progressive)

I would also need access to reliable postal/ shipping service and reliable internet service. Interested to see what I am overlooking, if anything. Thank you for input!

Boone, NC

You may have to live outside city limits to find your desired political outcome, but that will probably be true anywhere in WNC.

Black Mountain averages around 26" of snow, has a population just above 8K and is generally apolitical. Banner Elk gets around 31" and is similarly apolitical but has a population just above 1K. However, its proximity to Blowing Rock and Boone (plus Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain ski resorts) makes it feel much larger.

Thank you for the suggestions. Any thoughts on Eastern Tennessee? Unfortunately a very similar post I made on the tri-cities forum was removed for being too similar to this one.

Boone, NC and/or Banner-Elk, NC

The two larger ski resorts there are the highest in elevation of all ski resorts on the East Coast.

My sister has a home in Banner-Elk and just loves the place.

I have heard Erwin, Tn, on the Johnson City side has potential, taxes are lower than NC, but the weather is about the same as most of WNC barring the highest elevations of each, which get more severe winter weather.

Black Mountain averages less snow, around 11.42 inches a year.

Crossville gets the most snow of any city in TN, averaging just 14" a year at 1800-feet elevation.

OP, any reason why you haven't considered VA? The town of Wise receives over 30" of snow annually at 2500 feet elevation. Wise is about an hour due north of the Tri-Cities in East Tennessee.

This statistic has to be incorrect. Asheville averages 10.3 inches a year. While Black Mountain is a little higher than Asheville, I don’t think it gets anywhere near 26 inches a year on average,
