After spending many hours doing research, and a couple days visiting, wife and I have decided to look somewhere other than Hickory for retirement. Which leads to the question - what can you tell us about Morgantown? Information from people living in the area would especially be appreciated. We'd be interested in the cost and availability of homes, shopping, medical care, fishing, lifestyles in general....
Thanks!

Well, I can tell you "Morgantown" is a nice little place located in West Virginia
Plenty of fishing in the area with Lake James, Rhodhiss, and Hickory. And streams and rivers such as the Linville River, Wilson Creek, and of course the Catawba River.
Morganton does not have as much in terms of shopping nor restaurants as Hickory does, but since it is so close to Hickory a trip to Hickory is not an issue if you want to go to a place there. Morganton has the usual stuff like Wal-Mart, Big Lots, etc and a few decent sit down restaurants.
Oooops, sorry about that. I knew better, I just mistyped.
Do you still want info? I generally wait until I see a newbie such as yourself come back before I invest too much time writing all I can on a subject
I like Morganton, but it does have a pretty depressed economy just FYI.
However, for someone like me who loves the outdoors it is a great little spot .
You have South Mountain State Park just south of the city, Lake James on the western edge, Linville Falls, Linville Gorge, Table Rock and the wonderful Blue Ridge Parkway all north/northeast of it, easy access to I40 for quick trips to Asheville, a hospital, places to eat out, a vibrant active old Main Street with a an old timey movie theater - what more could you want?
