I am looking for a lot of inexpensive land within an hour of Asheville. I have looked into some surrounding areas like Hickory, Columbus and Waynesville, but it seems as if all these areas are pretty expensive as well. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Try north Madison County, out in the country. Mars Hill is up there and it's about 30 minutes to Asheville. You'd probably want to get outside of Mars Hill for cheaper land, and a little further north of the town. It's up towards the Tenn border along I26.

Just be careful about getting too far off the beaten path up there. Some real rural areas of Madison County still have some long term but not rich people straight piping into the streams.

I second Madison County. It's still in the Asheville metro area, but far enough away it'd be afordable. As a matter of fact, if I were to live anywhere else, it would be the Mars Hill area; close to Asheville, affordable, beautiful. Good luck!!

So Mars Hill is about 30 min. from Asheville. How far away is Marshall (also in Madison County)??? I found a lot of cheap land over there.

A little farther, but not bad. Marshall's about 10 miles from the Hwy. 23/70 freeway that leads to Asheville, where Mars Hill's right on it. Time-wise, not exactly sure. Mapquest.com would be a great help to you there. But if you're getting a good price for your property, it'd probably be worth traveling a few extra miles from time to time. Just be careful about "cheap" land.

Is the cost of land in this area going up significantly? Or would it be okay for me to wait awhile? How much is a reasonable price per acre?

Default land

This is an old post, but if you're still looking, Madison County is great. Cheaper than some other counties and reasonably commutable to Asheville.

I am living in Alleghany County right now, and I can live off of about 12grand a year. Almost no one around here is making more than 80grands a year. I'm only making 75, and I'm living well off.

I always have liked Old Fort, east of Asheville.
