how are the rhododendrons blooms looking right now? i am thinking about going up to asheville or the blowing rock area, but only want to go if they are in good bloom now.
if they are in peak now, which specific areas are the best to see/photograph them?
There are just starting to open in Blowing Rock. Along hiking the trails you see some in buds and others wide open. May not be as spectacular as last year. Some years like last year they are all blooming at once, then maybe the next year not so many. No matter what, they are amazingly beautiful.
Starting to open at our place on the western slopes . . . Roan Mountain is a good suggestion for photos! We have some open, and am wondering if we will have a big show this year or not . . . we usually count on taking good pictures around July 4th every year.

We went to the Rhododendron Festival in Roan Mountain today. It's in it's 63rd year and offers the largest concentration of Rhododendrons found anywhere in the world (600 acres). We first went up to the gardens (10 miles past where they have the festival). Just our luck...we could barely see anything! Not that they weren't in bloom, it appeared they were in full bloom. But it was sooo foggy and COLD. Like 57 degrees and WINDY, FOGGY. Water dripping on the path leading to the overlook. We were in shorts and short sleeves and literally needed to instead be dressed for Winter. We were disappointed not getting to see everything clearly at the gardens (located at an elevation of 6,300 ft), since at the festival down below it was mostly sunny and in the 80s. Hopefully anyone that goes in the coming days will have better luck!
