Marshfield or Wausau are great family friendly areas. I am currently in Wausau and it seems there is great support for home schooling.

Greenville/Hortonville area is a great suburb of Appleton. The school system is great and there are many young famlies that are new to the area. I love the Fox Cities area. Besides the friendly people and great things that Appleton offers it is also easy driving distance to Green Bay and Milwaukee.

The Eau Claire area has lots of medical facilities -- a smaller town nearby is Chippewa Falls (I grew up there!)

The city of Appleton just might be a bit bigger then you're looking for, with a population of 70,000. There are smaller cities surrounding Appleton, but they all pretty much are considered Appleton since they are so close to Appleton. We just moved from Madison to Appleton and consider Appleton to be a mini Madison. If I were you, I'd check into the Fox Valley area to see if it might be something you're looking for. So far we like it, will be calling Appleton our home going into our retirement years.
