The main problem with that, beyond the low national profile it keeps, is having to live in Beloit instead of Madison, Point, Eau Claire, or another nice burg. But yes, it's a very good liberal arts school.

UW is arguably the top academically, both public or private. Great city, good quality of life, campus is right in the Downtown area so always lots going on.

UWO is good for nursing, UWM is good for urban planning and architecture, UWSP for natural resources. UW-Whitewater for business (or so I have heard at least). Marquette is also a decent private school.

He attended a college prep high school and had a 3.8 GPA with a 28 ACT. Stout served his academic needs very well. The town of Menomonie leaves a bit to be desired, though.

U.S. News & World has ranked UW-LaCrosse the top public regional comprehensive in the Wisconsin system (Madison is in a separate category), and #4 in the entire midwest for the same category. Now, these lists have their critics, but UW-LaCrosse has been in that position the past 14 years.

UW Madison is #6 for Education programs as of the latest report I've seen. That doesn't necessarily mean it's the best school for you, however.

I'm biased, but UW-Whitewater is another good school in the system.
