Years ago, we had an issue with an employee misunderstanding a decision from HR concerning a request for an extended vacation.....long story.....anyhow, the problem was a language barrier, and our business manager made a point that this person should know English clearly after all the years in the US. I know a lot of people who have been here for generations and still do not grasp the English language. Now, at my job, the last 7 hires have been Dominicans who speak broken English, don't seem to understand English fully, and is either friends, or a relative of this one Dominican that was hired 5 years ago......I just shake my head because there have already been issues with the work not getting done properly, and can see this being a problem brewing.

So see if your HR dept will offer an ESL class during lunch or after shift. Most cities have resources for this, and they are not that expensive.

We did that, and the results were amazing. Much of our workforce is SE Asian, and they even had family members who would come.

Being proactive and looking for solutions is better than just exercising your neck muscles.

Are they able to bring on the Dominicans for less pay than their American counterparts?
