Even though I've delivered great work at each and every one of my jobs, it seems I'm always upstaged by the more bubbly extrovert who does a better job at self-promoting himself/herself and her accomplishments.
How can an introvert curry his or her boss's favor? Are there bosses out there who care more about the quality of their employees' work than their personalities? Is there such a thing as an introverted boss?
I know kissing butt always helps, but I refuse to stoop to that level. I don't mind chatting up a supervisor once in a while, but too much chit-chat takes a toll on me. I am also humble about my accomplishments -- is this something that I'll need to change about myself in order to stand out more?
What samston said; although I will add that for the most part it doesn't matter if you produce top-notch work, if you're not an extrovert you tend to get overlooked; which imo is ridiculous but it is what it is. At my company, we know how to have fun but first and foremost, employees are there to do their jobs.
Step 1 is for you to stop thinking that promoting yourself is akin to kissing ass. It isn't at all. The extroverts do indeed have a leg up on you and there is nothing you can do about it, other than getting comfortable with talkig yourself up too.
I would also say that dropping comments and hints to persons who hold power can help. This could be managers in other departments, or at a higher organisational level.

Yeah, there are such bosses. I just got my review, and it mentioned how hard I worked. They know that they can trust me to cover for people who are sick or on vacation--do their work in addition to my own. But I'm at work to get the job done, not to impress anyone else. I take pride in the quality of my work, and believe it reflects upon me. Poor quality work means a poor quality person.
