There are several reasons, many jobs have gone off shore because of government regulations and unions in the United States.

Most of these jobs will never come back.

Many jobs that the average American won't do because they think it is not good enough, are performed by illegal immigrants.

...immigrants are hard working people...

Most employers will use every possible means to cut overhead, the biggest overhead cost is employees.

As long as the government keeps spending money and raising taxes, businesses are going to have to fight to stay in business.
There are less jobs because of a long predicted change. Right now the U.S. is moving to the knowledge worker age and people who want to go to work and goof off all day are not being hired. People who have taken the initiative to be re-educated to fit in with this new age are soon going to be doing just fine.

Many jobs were off-shored because of low wages in other countries. But, with massive communication changes around the world people are going to stop working for a daily bowl of dirt soup. The countries that will be leaders are the ones that have a stable and healthy society. If you off-shore work to a country that is always fighting civil wars and can't provide reliable service you're gonna' hire a new country to perform that work. That means equality and prosperity must be had by the majority of the people or a country won't be able to compete.

Most of the low skilled labor jobs won't come back. Or they may come back as "hand made" product offerings. But, creativity not mass production will be the reason those products become successful.

The job of Americans is now job creation. Innovation and creativity for constant upgrading of products is what America should focus on. Jobs that are not good enough for Americans are performed by legal immigrants.

Immigrants and others are hard working people. However, the name of the new game is not working hard, it's working smart.

In this knowledge worker age, humans are assets not cost centers. Soon we will see a repeat of history in that the more workers you have, the more properous your business will be. The difference is that those people will be working with their minds not their hands.

Governments spend money and raise taxes, that's their function.

The only way there will be too many jobs is if millions die off...
This is an example of the change people aren't understanding. The challenge is not *finding* work. The challenge is *creating* work. People in their 50s, 60s, and 70s should be leaders in the recovery. They should not be looking for a job. They should be creating jobs for younger workers.

Those people who work 3 times as hard aren't working at the right things then. They should be working to *make* a recovery happen.

If older people get to work creating jobs, there will be plenty of jobs in the future.

"White collar" jobs were equated to middle management. Middle management is being eliminated. Having a job that involves performing Step1, Step2, then Step3 with your hands is a thing of the past. Today once someone has defined what Step1..Step3 are, a machine is developed to perform those steps so a human doesn't need to perform mundane tasks all day. Now we don't need a middle manager standing over people's shoulders making sure the work is done properly and quickly.

There will always be people needed to perform work but it is now knowledge work. If a task is too complex for a machine to be programmed to do it. Then a human will perform that task.

The majority of human work will be innovation. Coming up with new products or automating tasks involved with creating those products.

The corporate ladder will no longer be there for climbing. Flattening out the traditional heirarchy is one of the things knowledge work brings with it. Bureaucracy is an enemy of the knowledge worker. Highly educated knowlege workers don't perform well in that system. Creativity has always clashed with bureaucracy.

Jobs that afforded people the ability to hang around the water cooler all day are being automated. So, those people (middle management) are being removed.

Age will no longer be the dominant factor by 2018. Desire will be the dominant factor. Anyone of any age who possesses the drive to further educate theirself will be the dominant workforce.

What you are describing is a time when physical strength and vitality were needed to succeed. There are lots of people in their 60s that keep fit and are energetic and driven. Years ago many top level executives were'nt even considered for the job until in their 50s. With the trend toward regular exercise for older people the age factor (wisdom) is really now becoming an advantage. The more life experience a person has the more innovative they can be. It just takes some new education to bring them up to speed with the new technology.
We'll see. Perhaps we will be driving flying cars then too.

You don't have to wait. Some of the things I mentioned are happening already.

The smart and driven people are involved right now. You're welcome to join in.

The first step is to stop "waiting" for a job and start making something happen.

Boomers are pretty stubborn. However, as they retire, there are fewer Gen Xers to step into senior management's shoes.

Still, many Boomers will not have a choice but to keep working, as a lot of them lost their retirement in the crash.

You do realize people that have worked a job with a living wage are the ones that eventually start their own business and employ others. You can't create anything without cash.
