Background:

Applied for a job back in November. Didn't hear nothing until second week in December when I was emailed a questionnaire to fill out. Filled that out and after a little over a week was invited for an interview. About a week after the interview received notification that they wanted me to provide references. Did that and am now waiting.

For hiring managers, is this a good sign that a possible job offer is in the works, or is it just the run of the mill process?

It's not run of the mill. Most places won't bother to check references unless they are in the running for the position. Now that may mean they have it down to a few people or just you. No way to know that. But I certainly see it as a positive sign.

I don't think there is much to worry about at this stage. Perhaps their people resourcing method is to get references first, and then select on the basis of an interview.

So employers don't check references for all applicants/interviewees?

Some may. But in my experience most would not do this for a first round of interviews. Just a waste of time and money.

No, they don't. Usually. Reference checking is time consuming and expensive, so usually employers will only check their final choice, or perhaps their final two or three choices.

But....usually employers will tell you what's going on in the process, especially if you are a finalist. If they've been uncommunicative or hesitant to answer your questions about where things stand, that would probably be a sign that you are not one of the finalists, or that they aren't close to making a decision yet.

Looks like a good sign. They are going through the steps and if all checks out, they will probably hire you. Good luck!

No!

Unless you are going through a recruiter. When I was a headhunter for perm jobs-- I would check references for folks that I knew I was going to send to a hiring manager. I wanted to make sure that they were not lying, that they had a positive background, it is amazing how people will lie on their resume background, etc.

When I was filling in-house jobs as a corporate recruiter-- we only checked references when the person was going to move to an offer stage or if they were the top 2-3 people.

Ended up getting the job. Checking references must be the last step.
