I took a retail job in Bloomies one year and only worked there for ONE DAY.

I quit after that day, as it was a part time job and my day job interfered with it from the very first day so I knew I wouldn't be able to keep it.

Anywho, they never paid me for that day.

Now, do not ask me why I'm asking about this years later, because this happened like FIVE YEARS AGO! I just had the random thought today...could I ask for/get that money..?

Most states will defer to the federal labor laws and that is 2 years for mistakes and 3 years if they 'willfully" didn;t pay you. Since its five years, you may have to sue privately for the back pay. Its also common for them to claim they mailed it, it was never retuned so they assumed you got it since you never contacted them for five years. that lets them out of paying lawyers fees or court cost and only have to pay the back pay. Odds are the cost will exceed the amount you get.

Google Escheats for your state and then look up your name on the list. There's a statue of limitations after which your money becomes the states, but it couldn't hurt to look!

I would hire a team of lawyers and go after them.

Yes, hire a team of lawyers and go after them. Spend thousands of dollars to get back 40 bucks or however much it would be.

Have you called and asked their HR? They would likely say you are out of luck but you never know.

They will likely laugh in the OP's face. This sounds ridiculous to me. Five days seems like the reasonable amount of time to collect on this, but five years?

I'd say forget it and move on with your life. More than likely the place probably has new people working who don't even know you and if there still are employees there from when you worked that one day, they probably don't even remember you. You probably could have gotten your money if you would have brought this up during the time you quit and soon after (a week or two), however now there's nothing you can do. And really, considering it's retail, you're probably not out of much money anyways.

The advice to check the state where you were living at the time (and the state in which Bloomies is incorporated) for escheated revenue is good. But I also think that, if they didnt escheat your pay (and many companies dont, despite the state laws), the statute of limitations may have run out on your ability to collect.

My guess is, since you only worked there for a day and quit, you probably pissed someone off and they didn't bother to put all of your personal information into their payroll system.

Did you get a W2 at the end of the year? Probably not. I would say it is a safe bet there is no record of you having ever been employed there.

Anyway, it has been 5 years, why worry about it now?
