I am interested in launching a grantwriting, development communications, and social media strategy freelance operation to offer contract services to small nonprofits who do not have the time or resources to focus on the nuances of their fundraising efforts. I work professionally in higher ed fundraising but hope to supplement my income using the skills I have developed.
The only problem is that I have absolutely no idea where to start. Of course I have my portfolio from my full time job and volunteer gigs I have worked on, but how do I take those skills and market them as a freelance operation? I am in the process of designing a website (to supplement the blog I already run) and am continually working to build my professional reputation. I don't expect to actually start actively seeking clients for a minimum of 6 months.
Does anyone have any personal stories, book recommendations, or other tips?
Read My So-Called Freelance Life by Michelle Goodman. Excellent, excellent book. I, too, just started a freelance business and had no idea where to start. This book covers everything from legal to finding clients to managing your time. I highly recommend it.
