I posted this in the work and employment section because I know this area of C-D consist of people who are employees or managers and are familiar with using proper speech and English in a professional environment. I just wanted to know what you think about people who use curse words as apart of their normal vocabulary? Do you ever experience this in the work place? Or in day to day life? Are you one of those people?

I cuss all the time and, other than overeating treats, it is my worst habit. Worse yet, I do it in front of my kids and they've cussed too. Yep, bad, I admit it. Bad.

It's not necessary to cuss, but it slips out from time to time with me. I'm sure just about everybody does sometimes. In a work environment, I try really hard not to. I really think before I speak at work. If someone is constantly cussing like every other word, then yes that is uncalled for and highly immature. Total turnoff IMO. An occasional slip here and there or to express a certain emotion, I see no problem with.

Most words have personal meanings that others don't necessarily share (mother, love, hate, work, fun, etc). That some should be called 'curse words' just because of the meanings that some people attribute is ridiculous. THAT is what is uncivilized. Moreover it should be noted that the notion that certain words are verboten is largely a religious idea and it's not a coincidence that most words that are noted as 'curse words' are associated with 'sins' of those religions. For many people these words are nothing more than useful elements of speech that are versatile enough to be used as adjectives, adverbs, nouns, pronounces, verbs, and prepositions.

I suppose in social circles if a person wants to call cursing 'uncivilized' that's there prerogative. In professional settings, frankly I think it is ridiculous to apply religious meanings. Of course respect should be observed professionally, but merely excluding curse words from the conversation is hardly a guarantee of respect.

So no, I don't think curse words are an indication that one is uncivilized.

I don't think it makes people uncivilized, it just either makes them limited in their vocabulary or else unable to think on their feet and express more sophisticated words which still express their anger. Even if some people are okay with cursing and there are workplaces in which this habit is prevalent, others are not okay with it, so that seems to be the problem.

I work third shift in a relatively informal environment, and sadly have noticed my own trash mouth on occasion. I seem to use a few worn words when too tired to be articulate (or vigilent). I have learned, at least, to say "excuse me" if they pop out.

It makes you vulgar, profane, common. If that's the "civilization" you represent, then it's normal. It's becoming normal for the United States.

I used to curse a lot but the older I get the less I do it, and I never curse at work if I can help it. I think excessive cursing sounds trashy.
