What career can you get with a X degree in a Y major (degrees, owner)

This is not my story. It's a friend of mine. So as far as everyone remember in the previous thread about my background, I'm clueless as much as an uneducated kid on the street when it comes to the term of "college's knowledge".

Yesterday, I have a long chat with my friend about the career after graduated. He's an international student like me, and he's on the 2nd year of college to pursuit diplomat career. He's planning to take a master's degree in international relations. He doesn't want to go back to our home country after college.

Problem is, I don't think anyone who is not US citizen can go and work in UN. I means, it's pretty obvious about how can you represent a country when you're not even the citizen of that country. I did some research on google about this question. Various lists about what kind of career you can get with that major but none of them really point out the requirement about being an US citizen or not. But I can pretty much crossed Diplomat and Foreign Service Officer off the list.

What do you guys think about this?

Many people in the UN are from other countries. Actually, most countries hire their own people. For example, interpreters, translators, assistants, etc all maintain their nationality. There are other jobs in business for international relations people.

As for diplomat, I don't want to be a downer, but unless you know someone, it's not happening.

I work for a UN agency and there are people from every country on earth working here. Americans are a very small minority here in fact. And apart from the specific country missions (a very small part of the UN system), none of them are representing their country, even in the field. Our country officer in Myanmar is from Denmark, for example.

The UN has dozens of agencies--from UNICEF, to the High Commission on Refugees, the International Labour Organization and the World Health Organization--and hundreds of thousands of job posts across the globe.

Plus, as far as international relations, you can add in the jobs at thousands of international NGOs who hire people with these degrees all over the world.
