DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Wells Fargo Home Mortgage (WFC) has fired a Des Moines worker over a 1963 incident at a Laundromat involving a fake dime in the wake of new employment guidelines.

Richard Eggers, 68, was fired in July from his job as a customer service representative for putting a cardboard cutout of a dime in a washing machine nearly 50 years ago in Carlisle, the Des Moines Register reported Monday.

To this day I am baffled by idiotic PR that sometimes occurs at big time corporations. This is a land mine and they allowed it to explode. Whatever was in charge of this decision I would fire him and tell everyone else to never do something this stupid.

I won't ever be banking or doing business with wells fargo that is for sure.

Wells Fargo (like JPMC, BofA, etc.) has already been skating on thin ice with its unethical handling of the sub-prime mortgages over the last few years and the 2008 financial crisis.

And yet some still propose the government regulate these idiots even less.

Oh for God's sake.

While I do think those who took loans share in much of the blame, one cannot argue that banks had a big hand in it...so they got stiff regulations and now they want to blame everyone else for those regulations due, in part, by their own actions?

When will the whining stop? It doesn't make Wells Fargo look any better to blame "strict guidelines" when it was bankers who made "strict guidelines" happen due to their thieving...but want to fire a guy for a DIME worth from 45 years ago.

Good gosh - this just takes the cake... I didn't think putting a fake coin in a slot would even qualify as a criminal offense, guess I'm a hard-core criminal for putting British 5-cent pieces in place of the video game token back in the day...LOL.

But yeah, I think this guy really hit the lottery, as this will be an easy, easy lawsuit to win, to the tune of millions. I bet this guy's phone is ringing off the hook with all those lawyers falling over themselves to be the one to do the suin'...lol.

While I agree that it is terrible, I disagree that he has a lawsuit. He was fired in the face of new regulations the bank is following across the board. So, while the reason for his termination is nutty, the legality of it will likely not be an issue.

It's government regulation that led to this firing. Be careful what you wish for.

(too bad the "ex post facto" provision of the Constitution is pretty much a dead letter)
