Which government gets extra holidays? My wife is a government employee she gets ten days just like I always have as a private company employee.
In fact one could make a case that mine are better since she gets things like Veterans day whereas private you often have more logical ones like the Friday after Thanksgiving.
Some people get upset when big stores are closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. I guess a lot of the public just don't want some people to celebrate the holiday with their families and friends.........of which I think is BS!! I remember back in the late 60's and into the 70's when most stores were closed on Sundays.

That's what strategic vacation planning is for...if you don't get the day off after the "religious" holidays - take a vacation day. I'm sure gov't employees can't complain about good vacation benefits.
I am AM a progressive. I don't have a problem w/ gov't at all. I just want gov't to be doing its job (efficiently and ethically) and people have to be at work for that to happen - which of course, is just a gratuitous remark, having nothing to do with the topic at hand.
I just don't want gov't being too "generous" to itself...on my tab.

When I worked for a major city, we got the day after Thanksgiving, Veteran's Day, Columbus Day, MLK Day, Cesar Chavez Day along with the common holidays that most folks get off ...Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, 4th of July, Labor and Memorial Day .... 11 Paid holidays per year. Although I enjoyed them, I don't know if forcing the tax payers to foot the bill for the minor holidays is a wise investment of tax dollars.
Perry - I'd certainly agree that government workers get a great deal on vacation days, and every other form of benefit.
Chatteress - 11 days is slightly more than the usual 10 I've seen at private companies I've worked, but not so much more. I don't think I'd begrudge anyone getting 10 paid holidays since that is what I'd expect in a job offer too.
With apologies to OP if taking thread off course, if we're going to talk about unfair use of "our tab" I'd vent more in the direction of requirements for govt pensions that often allow perfectly able-bodied workers to retire in their early 50s with a full pension and health bennies. I think my wife can retire at 54 to have a nice permanent vacation on the taxpayer's dime, that is nuts.
ROFL. Employees of the US Virgin Islands Government (the largest employer in the territory) get a whopping 21 days paid holidays a year. In comparison, the private sector scrapes by with the usual 10-11 and most supermarkets and stores are open on major holidays. Oh and government employees get a nice retirement cheque and many retire quite early.
We all make our choices. Some accept lower pay and little chance of promotions over stability and decent benefits. Some of choose good compensation over job risk. And on and on.
You can't just pick out one aspect of a job in isolation without looking at the big picture.
