A boss or supervisor won't attack your personal life, i.e. - tell you that you're a bad parent, spouse, person in general, or comment on your appearance, i.e. overweight, too skinny, unattractive, because that's grounds for slander. However, they can rip you to shreds about your work habits/ethics and make you feel like the scum of the earth or the dumbest person that ever drew breath. They can do it legally, too, because it falls under the umbrella of "job performance." Unfortunately, when my abilities and skills that I have worked at and honed to near perfection for over 30 years gets called inadequate and sloppy, that hurts my heart like an arrow through it.

The theory's good but the practise means that many, many bosses get away with bullying and intimidation.
I don't think it's extreme to expect basic civility and respect at work.
If your job performance is not up to scratch, fair enough, constructive criticism, if that fails, fire them.
Don't make the persons life a misery just because you can, and don't be the one who sucks it up just because you have some misplaced sense of duty.
I was this person when I was working during my 20's and 30's. Even a little bit during my 40's, but when all that I had "sucked up" over the years started affecting my health, I knew something had to change. No job, NO JOB is worth risking your health for.
