I am working temp jobs while I look for a full time job. The agency called me and asked me if I would be interested in an opportunity that would last 3-4 months. I said sure, when can I go down for an interview? They told me the manager does not have time for an interview and they need someone to start immediately, so if I spin my wheels for more than a few hours they will hire someone else. I asked them (the agency) what if I do not like my boss or he does not like me or I have poor chemistry with my coworkers. They could not understand why I would need to be worried about something like this for a job that is temporary. (3-4 months seems like a long time to me)

I know that chemistry with my boss and coworkers is the most important indicator of job success. Why does the agency disagree? Your thoughts?

Yep, accepted a job under exactly those conditions when working for a temp agency briefly before I got my current job. It is just temporary and yes, I view 3-4 mos. as temporary. Not ideal, but that's often how temporary employment works. In fact, HR hired me for a permanent job one time and sent me to a bank branch. I had never met the manager (she was on sick leave), the co-workers or seen the place. I ended up working for that company 8 years.

Perhaps the boss does not care who does the job, so long as it gets done. Apparently it needs to be done now.

As a temp, if you do not like the job you don't have to keep it. You would not be getting the opportunity to check your chemistry with co-workers even if you interview with some boss who most likely will not bother to remember your name.

For me, if the job itself is something I can do and the money is right I will take that job every time knowing it is temporary.

take the job if you want the job.
temp jobs change bosses like you and i change socks. you are applying a good solid perm job rule to a temp job.
thats my think thats how i do it
thats my story im stickin to it.

It's only a few months. As a temp, you go with the flow. Don't worry too much -- you'll be fine. You are hired to fill a need and a job that needs to get done.

I wouldn't remotely be worried about chemistry or liking the boss for a 3 or 4 month job. I've been at my new job for 10 weeks now and I still don't even know most co-workers' names much less their personality type and I'm full time perm. I'm just busy working.

I did not accept the job.

My brother works as a Employee Relations Specialist and he tells me about all the people he works with who did not do a "chemistry check" with their boss or coworkers before accepting a job. The key to success in any job is how well you work with your boss and coworkers and how your work style and personality mix into the corporate culture.

Those of you that claim that you can work well without concern about the boss or coworkers are likely back office workers who are independent and do not have to interact much with your coworkers.

Your agency is going to peg you as hard to work with and not motivated and you will get the short end on offers of placement.

Agencies are more than willing to work with folks who will take the temp placements and at least try them. For you to turn it down like that - well, you'll be lucky to get another call from them, let alone a decent placement.

And agencies do try to find a good fit. But they would rather have you try the job, either stick it out for the short term or try it and tell them why it isn't working. They are trying to find a good fit for you and for the companies (who actually pay them, so they do expect things to often go their way). You will come across as someone they do not want representing the agency or the companies they place with.

You are a temp. Hired gun. You are hired to come in, do a job, and that's it. From the companies perspective, they want someone who can do the job and that's all. Do not expect to be treated like a perm hire. Do not expect accommodation beyond the minimum legally required. Your success is dictated by the ability to complete the work assigned to you and nothing more.

For permanent employees, it's a different story. My advice to you is to start thinking like a contractor and stop thinking like a staffer. If you don't, as was mentioned above, you will be branded a troublemaker and eventually, your agency will stop working with you.
