I got less than $470 a week after taxes and insurance. Turns out to be 11.72 an hour, or 24.37 k per year.

Does this sound right?

Could be right.

IRS standard withholding is going to be in the range of $80, assuming you are paid weekly, single wage earner, no exemptions.

FICA is going to be about $40

Your gross is $640-$120, leaving you with $520.

State taxes, county taxes, UI, insurance, etc could be another $50/weekly.

Lots and lots of variables though. How many exemptions you get, do you have city/county/state taxes, union dues, medical insurance, 401k deductions, med insurance, dental insurance, etc.

you can do the math, just check your state and local for the tax rate.

just your total - state tax(if any) - local tax(if any) - Fed Tax - Social Security Tax - Medicare tax

Of course if you're calculating how much you make for any purpose other than your own, it's always the gross number, not the net.

Take your wage X 2080. That's your annual.

Is it ok to ask your employer to give you a list of deductions from taxes and other factors so that you can see exactly how much portion of your paycheck have been deducted from the various factors respectively?

It should be part of your pay stub.

I don't think I received anything like that... I have direct deposit, does that make any difference? It just says how much has been deposited into my account.
