Back towards the end of July I had an interview with a company that I thought went extremely well. The HR person actually seemed to be selling me the job rather than me trying to sell myself. At the end of the interview she said she had 20 interviews to do that day, and that I would hear by phone or mail by Friday. Needless to say, that Friday came and went. I tried to contact the recruiter at the number she had called me from originally, which happened to be her cell phone. I left a voicemail and got no response. A bit later I called the companies main line, asked about my interview and was forwarded to the HR ladies office voicemail, same deal again, left a message, no response.

The weird thing about the whole deal was that I had dropped my application off on a Friday at 11am. At 2pm the same day she called and wanted to set me up for an interview that Monday first thing in the morning. Add to that the way the interview went, I thought this was a sure thing! Obviously I misread the cues or something. Anyway, the company still has a big sign out front saying they are hiring. My interview was around the 3rd week of July...is it too soon to put another application in?

You may have missed cues... I had a similar situation in which I thought they were trying to sell me on the job, but alas, I didn't get it. This was a serious professional job with several rounds of interviews and I flew cross-country for the final round, at their expense. I was given a clear deadline by which I would hear. Came and went... waited a week to contact them, and no one would respond to me... waited another week, contacted a different HR person... after a few days, finally got a stock response that the job had been filled.

BUT... as it turned out (my sleuthing discovered this) the hiring manager had actually been fired. The whole position had been scrapped. The whole department was restructured, merged with another department.

That's an extreme situation, but it's very common for all sorts of behind the scenes things to delay hiring, of positions at all levels. I think it is the height of unprofessionalism for companies to ignore people who actually went out of their way to interview (versus just apply) and it should take no time for them to send you a form e-mail. But, it happens all the time.

I don't think it's too soon to put in another application... but I'm interested in more details. Would it be for the same position? Is it a general call and not for a specific position? I'm inclined to say you really need to get feedback before applying again, but it sounds like that hasn't been possible. Although actually... can you try to find an e-mail address? It seems like HR tends to avoid phone conversations, particularly when rejecting someone, but they may respond to an e-mail, at least confirming that no, you're not still being considered. It would also be nice to find out if you would be considered in the future.

They would have called you and hired you if they were interested. The sign is still out because they are not settling. Definitely too early to apply!

Thanks for the feedback!

The job isn't anything fancy by any means, its just a blue collar job. It just would have for my schedule perfectly. I have another job that I do that actually pays the bills, this would have been something extra.

I have a feeling I may be "over qualified".
