I am sixty two years old and retired but desperately trying to get back into an executive senior management position.
Last week I had an interview and the man who talked to me asked this question:
"Are you a high energy person who is devoted to your career who will do pretty much anything to be successful?"
He went on to say that this was a TYPE A organization where people work long hard hours and are full of energy and drive and determination and totally committed to success at all costs.
I had this image of a bunch of 30 somethings who were working 80-100 hours per week and doing everything to win even if this meant stepping on people.
There's a reason I left the corporate world and haven't looked back since. I'd give 'em the bird and keep on walking. I might give you a different answer if my goals were different.
I was... then the place I worked at for 10 years threw me out like a piece of trash, despite all the "exceeds expectations" on performance reviewed, the performance awards, disclosure awards, etc. So, yeah... after wasting 10 years of my life only to learn that hard work really doesn't pay off in corporate America, I can safely say I'll never put an ounce of faith in another company again. I'll do my job - and I'll do it well - but that's it, and I expect to be paid since that's the only motivator left. Because I know full well that years of good performance mean nothing if the company hits a bump in the road the choice comes down to either laying me off or laying off a connected crony.

How do you make money after you left the corporate world?
His argument in a world economy he feels that his company can not survive unless everyone is a TYPE A, high energy, career over everything philosophy.
I have asked this question many times and have never gotten a response: for those of you on this board who feel that employment should be a privilege limited to "Type A, high energy, career over everything" people, how do you expect the rest of the nation to survive? Should we just be homeless and starve and die? Or do you want the government to take care of us? If the later, then how do you feel about the government taking away your hard earned money to support everyone who doesn't share the same personality, energy, and philosophy as yourself? If the rest of us who don't want to meet your standards still want to be productive members of society, why should we not have that option?
Did you research the company before you applied there? If so, were you surprised by the question?
