My wife's two nephew twins are graduating from High School up in Maryland in June 2014. THEY CAN'T WAIT! Both are so tired of going to school and struggle passing their classes and have a "C" average.

They keep telling me that once they graduate they are moving out of the house together renting a townhouse and live the good life far from their controlling mother.

I ask them what they plan to do and they say they will get a good full time job. Doing what, they are not sure.

So here is my question: If you don't go on to the military, a vocational technical school, or college in 2014, what type of full time job would a person go after?

The nephew twin boys are white kids in a very ethnically diverse community (Silver Spring MD), where many of the unskilled jobs are taken by people of color and immigrants. And there are no factories to speak of in their community..

If they were your kids what would you think they would do, if they absolutely refuse to continue their schooling and won't go into the military. ??

Lower level jobs in a Fortune 500 company, any utility or the federal government. Then once employed there, work on moving up the ladder by submitting yourself for jobs that are internally posted but are a higher grade level. Do this year after year and you gradually move up the ladder.

In OP's case, they are close enough to DC that they should go after Fed Gov work or related contractor.

Since they plan to get their own apartment, they can pick an apartment that is in close proximity to the jobs. They don't need to stay in the exact town as mom and dad if that specific town doesn't have the best job opportunities. Maybe a town 40 miles away has several large employers.

What would I do?

Sit around and wait until another one of life's harsh lessons is learned She can't teach her sons everything about life, that's something they will learn for themselves. They are 18, plenty of time to remedy a premature move into the adult world.

If I were in their shoes, I would target any job that is closely tied to a trade or skill that can be picked up. Government, Union, or Utility job will provide some sort of framework from which upward mobility is clearly defined.

Don't just look for a job... look for a training opportunity.

Of course, this also means a certain level of maturity.... as previously posted, you can't teach them maturity. Are they refusing to go to school or essentially refusing to learn? The latter is a quick path to the uneducated poor.

Finding work is the least of their parent's concern at this point. If I were their parents, I would let them struggle post HS. Let them fail, struggle, suffer, but always be there to guide them. Some simply need to learn by learning to sink then swim.

I have been looking at help wanted ads on the Internet and see few if any jobs other than retail that don't require training or experience. Someone earlier said they should look for something at a large company or the federal government that will provide training. I don't see those jobs advertised. Find me an example help wanted ad or opportunity for someone who has no work experience or post high school training.

Think lowest level job....cafeteria worker, sorter in the mail room, janitorial, moving furniture/eqpt, cleaning out lab rat cages in a test lab, shredding paper, cleaning vehicles, porter, registration desk, entry level data entry job.
