Amazon workers' lawsuit to be heard by US Supreme Court | Internet & Media - CNET News

Amazon warehouse workers have to wait in line up to 30 minutes to go through a security check to make sure that they have not stolen any merchandise. Amazon does not pay them for this time, It seems to me a no brainer that they would have to be compensated for the time under the 13th Amendment if nothing else. If you're off the clock, not being paid, you're free to go. But not at Amazon.

A friend told me that years ago he had a job where special gear had to be donned before starting work. The company required that workers don the gear before clocking in for work. A labor arbitrator ruled that the company had to pay them for time spent gearing up.

Amazon must have some super high-powered lawyers. What my friend resolved through labor arbitration is now going all the way to the Supreme Court.

This will be an easy win for the workers.

Wow I never knew Amazon could treat their employees like this. I can't believe it's even got to this stage - I would have thought some kind of law had been broken by forcing them to stay at work and not be paid for it.

I had a couple of phone interviews once with Amazon thinking it would be such a great place to work, I'm glad it never got further than that.

Yep never heard anything good about working for amazon. A fellow student was excited to get a job interview with amazon, before i told him to look up how they treat employees.

I was probably indifferent to amazon but I had no idea about this - definitely something to consider. I know that service jobs are typically low-end but making employees take unpaid time just to get through a security check is about as low as it gets.

I worked there and it takes literally 10 seconds usually. It's like going through a metal detector. That's just the lawyers trying to exaggerate things to get attention. Try working a salaried position where people work through their lunches everyday.

Having worked in retail sometimes there would be checks but to argue a half hour means someone is probably lying. A metal detector takes how long? Ever go into a federal building? I would be hard pressed to wait more than a few minutes.
