I was recently unemployed and my unemployment was about to run out so i got a job offer for a crappy lil $12 an hour job as an assistant store manager. i started this past monday, on tuesday morning i got a phone call from one place i interviewed with the week prior and told me they want me to come aboard for a $41,000 a year job with a $2,000 annual bonus if bonus is met.

I'm going to take the 41k job obviously and they want me to start on May 21st, my question is what is the best way to tell the people who are currently training me to be the assistant store manager and want me to start running the store next week sorry i am quitting i got a better job, I don't want them to waste their time training me cause that is just awful.....

any suggestions?

It's business. They don't care (and would kick you to the curb at the drop of a hat if given a reason!).

You haven't even been working there long enough to put it on your resume so just shoot them an e-mail and peace out.

Congrats on the better job!

Congratulations on your offer! That's a big move from unemployment to $12/hr to $40k/yr within a week. I'm happy for you.

When I resigned, I always request a meeting with the boss to discuss private matters. It's not professional to do it in front of other co-workers.

Be sure to have a resignation letter to turn in. It doesn't need to be wordy. Fishbrains has a concise letter.

Retail jobs are high turnover positions, anyway. Many stores have lost new hires, after only a week or two. The boss man is more familiar with this situation, than you.

Personalize it any way you like. The bottom line is you are going to be dumping the job with short notice, probably marked down as in eligible for rehire, but you don't care about that because you have a better job.

Showing them the offer letter doesn't change anything.

FWIW, I would do it in person, because that is appropriate etiquette. I just don't think that you need to give them reasons, proof, name of new employer or an apology. It is a business transaction, you are ending it, move on.

the only reason i gave was better monetary compensation, (there is more than just that) but i wanted them to know if they ever wondered why it wasnt because of them..... I feel bad ya know

this is a sub question i also posted in the unemployment forum....

ill copy and paste it here

Ok like i was saying in another thread i started i started a job this week for a crappy retail thing because i only had 3 weeks of unemployment left, i got an offer for WAY better pay 41k a year to start the 21st of may, if i knew i was going to get this job for 41k i would of never started this other crappy job. Is it possible to quit my crappy job now and collect unemployment for this week and next week (i only worked 10 hours at the crappy job this week) or will that screw me? I haven't declared yet to NJ unemployment that i started this job since claiming dates are sundays and i started monday..... any chance i can still claim for this week if i quit today and claim for next week until i start the better job....
