my husband just started at that company and isn't the type to just call someone he doesn't know well to ask something like that. and how do YOU know if a random coworker he asks will have better advice than a thousand people here who have BTDT? actually all these responses have been very helpful.
Well, he doesn't have to call someone, but he can ask female co-workers at the office. I do think people who have actually attended this party in years past will be a smidgen more helpful than any of us randoms.
Your husband is in mid management. I will tell you what I know from the corporate world back a few years. I have seen too many managers wives, that did not understand the importance of dressing for the occasion at events like this.
Your husband will be judged by his superiors on how you dress for future promotions, as you will be with him to represent the company at certain events as he moves up. His juniors will be looking at you, and you should look like a managers wife. It is more than a Christmas party for your husband, but his first time at a major company event. For your and his future, it is important that you look good.
A nice dress, and the right accessories and make up are very important. So go in and make the other ladies a little jealous, and your husband a proud man. Go in and look like a managers wife. It is important, more so than you realize. They always say the first impression is the most important one you will ever make. Go dressed to impress, as you will never have another chance to make a good first impression.
Depends on the company and the industry. If it's a little company where dress isn't enforced then it probably wouldn't matter.
