I hate dresses. Am I supposed to wear one to a holiday company dinner at a hotel? Can I wear slacks and a sweater or will I be completely underdressed? If it matters, my husband works at the company, not me.

Your husband can ask what the dress code is. Unless it is a formal dinner, I don't see why you would have to wear a dress. I have seen plenty of woman at Christmas (and other) parties in slacks and a blouse.

At our work catered holiday parties, we are all dressed to the nines, sparkly holiday dresses - if I wore slacks and sweater I would feel very underdressed. I would ask some of the other women what they are wearing. This is a nursing home btw, not a field where we are generally dressed up.

At company parties I see people dressed in various ways. At a party you should be comfortable and festive . There are plenty of great outfits you can wear that are pants and a dressy sweater.

I'd also look at time (evenings are dressier) and menu. What does your husband do? What's his level & salary?

Completely depends on the organization and other factors. Nobody here can answer this with any accuracy.

At our events we all dress very nice - much better than we do at work. Even the line staff who wear slacks and a polo to work come dressed in nice suits or dresses, hair done, nice make up and jewelry, etc.

Honey, you're stepping out with your husband to his company party, dress to the nines. Wear a nice cocktail dress, hair, makeup the works. Don't just look good, look damn good (especially if it's corporate America).

lol... maybe you're right. he just started pretty recently. it's a big IT company so he's very casual at work. he's like a mid manager to the poster who asked. i don't have a cocktail dress. i literally own one dress so i'd have to go and buy one. also, to another poster who asked, the event is a dinner one, so 6-9 pm.

Do you want to wear a dress? Has there been a notice that the party is a formal affair?

Can't go wrong with a little black dress.
