i can't say i disagree.

so when you say that male workers are vanishing...all i can really say is, i'm not surprised.
Instead of blaming women, men should get their butts to college, too, since that what they claim is putting women ahead.

Most of the jobs created post recession have been low wage service work, which women dominate. Every time I go into a retail store or a fast food place the vast majority of workers I see are female

Yes, the managers prefer having young attractive females in front-end customer service positions. But you will always find men in the back doing the burger flipping, breaking down the grocery load, etc.

I just looked at the interactive map for my county (Bedford co. TN) and of 9114 men age 25 to 54 25% are not working! That is 2,278 men sitting at home idle!

In some counties in Tennessee over 50% of the men are idle. If you look in some counties in eastern Kentucky it is 65%

In my area I see quite a few jobs being posted lately and many of them lower skilled factory jobs paying 10 to 12 dollars an hour. A job like that is at least going to pay the bills while you look for something else.

Great. Another hollow suggestion to 'retrain'.

Retrain for what?

I can understand not taking $10 an hour. That will hardly pay the bills, and really won't if you have any dependents. At 40 hours a week that's $1600 a month, subtract about 20% of that for deductions and taxes, you've got $1280 take-home.

I live pretty frugally but making that little would put me in the position of losing my house (and my house was cheap - only $95K).

My basic bills:
Mortgage/Insurance/Taxes - $640
Electric - $60 (would have to just bundle up in winter & barely run heat)
Utilities - $65
Transportation (gas, insurance & averaged maintenance) - $120 (could be cut to maybe $75 in an emergency situation)
Food - $300 (could be cut to $150 in an emergency situation)
If you're making low income, at least you could get some subsidized health insurance through Obamacare, even though it's crappy. From what I've seen - making $10 an hour would put a bronze plan at about $50 a month.

That's $1040 a month minimum right there. I'd have to pray nothing happened out of the ordinary, ie: home repair, car repair, health issue.

These could be cut in an emergency situation, but it would not be advisable
Cell Phone - $80 (this is necessary, not a luxury in today's world) (maybe could cut to $40 - no smartphone)
Internet - $65 (again, a necessity, not a luxury in today's world)

This puts it at $1185.

I've got about $100 left over. Not a good situation. If you have any dependents, $10 is impossible to live on; you'd be eligible for SNAP & maybe some other benefits. That's why $10 an hour is not a realistic wage - in reality the rest of us are subsidizing the employers that pay that low to heads of households.

If you rely on low-wage workers and they are eligible for benefits -- YOUR BUSINESS PLAN IS NOT VIABLE -- in a world where there was no SNAP, WIC, TANF, rent assistance, etc... these employers would HAVE to pay more.

People in TN generally have no work ethic. They'd rather deal drugs or do nothing at all rather than honest work. That's one of the reasons I left, other than work just not being available.

When I worked low paying jobs usually the other workers would go to school with that one job or have a full time job besides that. The reason why these jobs pay so low (they always have) is because they require little skill and there is a near unlimited supply of workers where one can be replaced on a whim. I know that college isn't for everyone, but you absolutely need some kind of vocational training so you can command a good wage. Generally jobs that you get off the street and require minimal training aren't going to pay much.
