My wife is still working and does not plan to retire for a couple more years. Last night she was talking about Holiday (End of the Year) Bonuses. Back when I was working full time and up to a few years ago my wife would always get a nice bonus a few days before Christmas, and our friends did too. Starting a few years ago the bonuses stopped. They blamed the economy. Now the company she is working for says they had a great year but there was no end of the year bonus.
Did you get a Holiday end of the year bonus at your employer? Take my poll.
It's hard to guess their reasoning without knowing what kind of company this is.The company may be "doing great," but given the numbers still may not work out to where they can give bonuses.
It's best not to rely in bonuses since they are supposed to be "extra."
We had a big "bonus" thread a couple of weeks ago. Having a great year does not necessarily dig them out of a two or three year hole. I, along with a significant number of the workforce, work in industries that do not have bonuses -- the thought of a bonus is a foreign concept.
A bonus is usufally given, because a company has reached or exceeded a certain goal. If that goal is not reached they do not pay a bonus.
You said, the company has said they had a great year. In today's economy that may mean they did not lose money this year. But they apparently did not reach the goal, where there was money for a bonus to their employees.
I have not seen allot of Christmas bonuses, my previous employer gave out $200 for people who worked for the company for a at least 1 year around New Year's.
The bonuses I have seen are performance bonuses and year end bonuses that are listed in my employment agreement.
I DID receive a bonus, although it was taxed. I was hired by my church last January, and I work PT on my own schedule. The "board" approved a bonus for me, and it was a very nice, unexpected surprise. This is the only job I have ever worked in which I received a bonus.

At my current employer, I usually get a 2 bonus checks a year, one in December and another one in February or March.
My bonuses are not discretionary, they are contractual based on key metrics set at the start of the year. I can calculate exactly how much I will get. My employer and myself sign to agree on it and each receive a copy.
Please don't take this as an attack in any way, but why would anyone feel entitled to a bonus?
Btw, my brother recently won a free car (besides tax) at his job, and received a bonus. It's a luxury, NEVER an expectation. In my opinion, hard work is my bonus. I like knowing I've done the best I could and I don't need a pat on the back to feel such. I'm only 23 though, so what do I know?

I didn't get one for 2014 since I started a new job too late in the year. But we do have incentive bonus and performance bonus based on pre-determined metrics. The nice thing is that a large portion is a % into your 401K (the trend has always been in the double digits), so the tax is deferred.

This has always bugged me with a previous employer. The normally gave everyone $250-$500 around the holidays (this was in addition to incentive pay). This was known as the "xmas bonus" by all. Well, in 2009, it was held back due to the economy. The response was vocal. I get it. Nobody was happy about it. However, many said that they felt slighted because they already had made purchases in anticipation of getting the money. Really?
