Just wondering how you feel about the open concept in offices? I like the semi private feel of these new designs. Hated sharing my every phone call or sneeze with the whole floor. And most eople don't really want private offices Somewhere in between seems to be in order.

Office designers find open-plan spaces are actually lousy for workers - The Washington Post

I really wasn't a fan of the open space layout and I only had to endure it 1 week per month. That said, my company believed that putting a 50 person sales team next to the 30 person engineering/design team was a good idea. Loud phonecalls were a way of life. Every time someone closed a sale, they would ring a bell. One guy would walk around with one of those hand strengtherner things, too. Squeak Squeak all day long. And the manager was constantly commanding his team like an drill sergeant. I couldn't concentrate on things as I wanted. I'd often try and find an empty conference room to work in.

I'm working from home now. It's the other extreme and I'm MUCH happier!

I was fine working in full and half cubes previously. Those little pod things in the article look ok for a temp space but I couldn't imagine being in them for long periods every day. They look a little claustrophobic.

The concept of refuge rooms is a perfect example of an industry creating a problem by trying to be different, and then instead of reversing themselves, creating something equally idiotic to solve the problem they created.

Employees shouldn't have to seek refuge in order to concentrate.

We went to a semi-open office a while back. At first I thought I would hate it.

Each "cube" is actually 4 1/4 offices around a central table. I kinda like it. Around 2pm, we get a coffee, put our feet up and brainstorm ideas.

I like offices surrounding an open area. This way you have your privacy, but then can also "hang out" in the open area. But I can also see how that wouldn't quite work in areas where real estate is scarce. We are currently out growing our building, and it simply wouldn't make sense to have some open area unused 70% of the time.

Ultimately, it really depends on the job/culture as well. I've been in cube farms, shared office, open office, private office and home office. All have pros and cons.

I like corner offices with ample sunlight and 360 degree panoramic views of the adjacent city skyline and waterfront and room for a put put. Has not happened yet, but perhaps someday!

Been in all different types and absolutely hate any form of open office. Love being in a private office. The ability to close the door and concentrate is tremendous. We just reorged where I am and went from having an office back to a cube. My productivity has dropped at least 30-50%. The interruptions, noise, and people who want to chat constantly disrupt getting work done.
