I have had 2 female bosses working in IT. Neither knew there butt from a hole in the ground.
Answer your phone on vacation time? I would take some of my vacation time and charge it as regular time if my boss asked that.
Don't matter if its IT Nursing Teaching whatever profession, I never will pick up the phone during my vacation time.
Vacation : a period of suspension of work, study, or other activity, usually used for rest, recreation, or travel; recess or holiday.
That's what it means.
The stereotype that IT pros must have IT on the mind 24/7 is BS
At least where I work at nobody has that mindset
Hey Im human too not a damn robot so yeah im no different then a teacher nurse or business manager. I deserve to rest because we Americans work too much
Sometimes, my manager just makes me want to quit on the spot.....
Yesterday, she was upset with me because I didn't bring my work phone (we all have iPhones) on my vacation with me. She tried calling me during one of my vacation days and I didn't have the phone with me to answer. She was pissed. I told her I didn't want to carry two phones while on vacation. She now urged me to bring my work phone with me on all future vacations. She even said that I should be checking the damn phone every 30 to 60 minutes while on vacation. Are you KIDDING me?! What kind of vacation is THAT?! I could see maybe once or twice a day...fine. But, I ain't doing that while I'm on vacation. My position isn't even that important (trust me).
Another time, I was talking to her about how I have been having a lot of doctor's appointments over the past year. I can tell she's upset with that, too. But Jesus....I am not going to ignore personal health concerns. At one point, I said to her, "well, at least it's all free healthcare haha," (my company pays for 100% of everything) and she replied in a serious tone, "ummmm....no, Nick....the company pays for it." I replied, "haha, well yeah, I meant out of pocket." She made a weird smirk of disapproval, as if I'm abusing the system or something. Are you KIDDING me?! It's a freekin' employee BENEFIT for crying out loud. No one ever told me, "oh, here's your healthcare benefit, but you can ONLY see a doctor four times a year!" Give me a break.
Sigh....I can't wait to retire already...
Certainly feel for you. That said, people say/do stupid things all the time, some just happen to be managers. As much as people like to insinuate it, being a manager is not the cause.
Complaining about a manager saying the "stupidest things ever" is comical, don't you think?
Vacation is time away from work. I will no longer take a phone paid for and exclusively used for work on my personal vacation time. My spouse and children get that time to themselves. Working on personal time means it is no longer personal time and therefore needs to be compensated.
As far as the health care issues, gloating over "free" health care is once again not demonstrating a huge level of maturity on your part. It may be to your benefit to simply close the hole under your nose and bide your time until retirement or job change becomes a viable option.
I have delt with the clueless manager before who had no idea how to run a staff and get anything done. I stayed 8 months, had enough and quit. Some people are NOT meant for management yet they are there anyways. Usually they will look fine and the employee will get the crap. I also hate it when managers are so overly serious. I dont expect them to be buddies but just act human and treat everyone the same. Yea, iv had some pretty pathetic bosses. Worst was when I worked as a waitress after high school. 3 manager and no clue, they all said different things and had seperate rules.
I bet your company has so many long time employees because of that too. lol
Someone wins Survivor, and probably game of thrones.
Seriously though....the pay is pretty darn good. But of my group I have probably worked here the longest. And that is complicated.
1 year contractor.
2 years hired on as a full time employee
1.5 years as a temp contractor again after the local office closed
2 years as a outsourced contractor after they didn't have any employee slots open, but did have contractor money......
so 6.5 years.....next highest is probably in the 4 yr range. Everyone else is gone or has been here less then 2 years. 5 different managers. 2 projects, 5 different job titles, and in the last 2 months they fired half of my team. Ironically I'm up for a promotion. Which means more stress.
