I work at a large big 4 firm, and recently am making the transition to private accounting. I got hired 2 wednesdays ago by a Fortune 100 company, I accepted the offer and took the drug test last Monday.

The new job is in Miami, Florida. The new company wants to start me on July 20th, which means that I would have to put in my two weeks this Monday, on July 6th.

However, I haven't heard back from my background check, nor have I heard back about my drug test. (Prior to my drug test on Monday, I took some pills on Friday that I got over the shelf at GNC, however, it later on got recalled for having bits of Cialis and Levitra in it, which are ED drugs). I also had 1 single cigarette on Sunday before the drug test because my uncle was in town and asked me to have one with him in memory of my grandpa who passed away (its an ongoing joke we have, very long story).

With that said, I'm scared that the pre employment drug test will detect that I've been taking ED drugs or something, and perhaps maybe they will pick up on nicotine? Am I being paranoid?

Irregardless of that, is it reasonable for me to call HR at the new company on Monday, and tell them that "Hey, I don't want to put in the 2 weeks at my job up until I get the green light from you guys. Despite having nothing to hide, I just don't want to put in my 2 weeks as long as there are any contingencies out there." Is that a normal request, or is that something would red flag me and have them look at me even closer?

So essentially what I'm asking is:

1.) Will cigarettes / ED drugs (minimal amounts found in a recalled product from GNC) show up on a drug test for a fortune 100 company? In general terms, I know each company is different.

2.) My start date is July 20th, I am in Miami, Florida. I would have to put in 2 weeks on July 6th (this upcoming Monday). Would it be proper for me to ask the new company for a pushback in start date, if the background check is not done? I don't want to put in my 2 weeks, have the new company not like something in my background check and pull the offer, leaving me jobless.

I have nothing to hide in my background check, and I didn't do any typical drugs like marijuana, cocaine, etc. However, you never know with these background check companies.

Thanks for any help!

Wait until drug test and background test is completed. Even if this means you have to give a 7 day notice instead of a 2 week notice. Don't push back the start date. You don't want to jeapardize the new job just because you want to give exactly 2 weeks notice at the old job.

You could call to check status at the new job as you said, because you want to give 2 week notice. That's fair. Sometimes they have the results and don't even bother to inform you that all that stuff is complete. You want drug screening and background check to be completed. Even though you have nothing to hide on either, you want to make sure it's all clear because sometimes mistakes occur.

Well if they won't budge, i can give less of a notice I guess, still extremely unprofessional and will hurt me in my field if other jobs call for a reference.

I'm thinking of asking if they can push back the start date, and say that if they won't I'll make it work.

It is ridiculous to make me let go of my main source of income, without being sure of the other one.
