My current job ends this Friday, and I am currently searching for new employment. I need to start a new job very soon in order to pay my rent and bills. However, I have the opportunity to go to my home country this August for ~17 days. I would be going with my family, and they want to book the plane tickets this week - there is no chance I will have a job by that time, so I would not be able to check with a job whether or not I can get time off.
So my question is - how likely is it that a company will hire me, knowing I will be gone for two weeks next month? My main concern is that I will say yes to going and then not get hired because of it. I have not seen my home country or many of my relatives in nine years and would of course love to go home, but don't want to lose out on a job!
If I was in your case and I had the money to pay for the trip, I'd go.
That's actually what I did once. I was looking for an "in-between" type of jobs because I know I'll be going to my homeland for 5 weeks. I got a contract, ended just in time for when I was about to leave. Right before my contract ended, I was offered a permanent job in a different department. There were about 30+ some of us doing the contract (Christmas season) job but they are only looking to hire 2 - 3 people. They chose me as one of that 2 - 3 people. I told them I understand the position is limited, but I already booked my flight, it was their call. They still hired me. I was to report to them as soon as I got back. I didn't even have a definite date.

Go to visit your family. If you get hired prior to leaving, simply tell them (once you have offer in hand) that you already have a planned trip.
I have been hired despite needing time off and I just told my employer that I had a previously scheduled trip. I've also worked with new-hires who already had time off planned.
If you can afford to be out of work until September, go. If not, don't go.
