I just started a new part-time job and am already having issues with one of my kids who broke her collarbone. The doctor we were referred to only has appointments that conflict with my work schedule, and it's uncertain how many follow-ups are going to be involved before this ordeal's over. While my boss seemed nice enough about it the first time, I get the feeling that he won't continue to be flexible.
Out of fear of getting fired, I'm thinking I should just quit before it gets to that point. Since we don't have family around, and my husband commutes out of town to his relatively new job where they have an extremely strict attendance policy during the probationary period, I have no choice but to be the one to take her to her appointments.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? My main reason to quit so abruptly is just because I don't want to be fired and have that come back to haunt me in later searches when our situation becomes more stable (i.e., my husband completing his probationary period at work and being more flexible to help out in emergencies). I think it would sound better to say that I left due to family issues, rather than being terminated over attendance issues.
Isn't the point of a part-time job to have flexibility in your schedule? I think you're jumping the gun a little bit here and being too paranoid. I would just be straight up with my boss and say "I know this isn't ideal, but my kid had a severe injury and I might have to miss some hours for his doctor appointments. If this is a problem let me know."
Quitting rather than getting fired also doesn't make much sense. How would your next employer know why you were laid off anyways? There's a million ways to sugarcoat the answer to that question in an interview ("Why did you leave your last position?"), and if they follow up on your previous job the only things they are allowed to say are "she was here from X to Y and this was her job title". Why would you even put it on your resume anyways if you just started?
