So it was that time of the year again and my colleagues decided to do Secret Santa. Boy oh boy did i not screw up. I ended up getting the name of our finance manager, the person that i report to. With little to no time to think about what to buy i decided to buy his favorite diet coffee. He's a bit overweight and sips it at work all the time so instead of thinking it might offend him i bought him a huge can of it. My rationale was that since it's something he uses everyday he might like it. He opened the gift and he looked uncomfortable. Didn't say very much. And then the female coworker that im closest with, whom i foolishly told who i gave the gift to, made a public announcement about it to the entire office. They are laughing at my manager and me too. I'm worried for my career because he might think that i did this to humiliate him. Now how do i handle this. Do i let this go? Or do i talk to the manager and explain and apologize? because he will most certainly find out it was me.

This is the reason why I think workplace gift-giving is beyond stupid. Creates confusion and tension for all involved.

Next time just go giftcard to a place with 0 possibility for controversy. Like Target or Amazon.

I would speak with him. Tell him that you bought him a product you know he uses and enjoys; it was not your intention to make him uncomfortable.

+1 to the stupidity of work gift exchanges.

Thanks. What worries me more than him not liking it is that the coworker breaking the news to everyone and escalating it into a huge funny scene. That's why i feel like i should apologize to him.

Is he embarrassed because it's a diet drink? I don't see a reason to be embarrassed but I don't know the whole situation.

yes, and he's overweight. He might not have been embarrassed a lot but i feel like in the upcoming days the rest of the team will make fun of him to the point where he will be.

How bad was it though? Was it like Diet soda or low fat starbucks? Or was it something bad like "Super Slimmer 8000 for the fatso in your life"?

Do y'all take a few days off for Christmas and New Year's? Probably everyone will forget over the holidays and any teasing will die down, unless everyone in the office really dislikes him.
