I deal with coworkers and clients primarily based out of the northeast. In general, these people are difficult to deal with, belligerent, and aggressive, almost to a person. I have never met a friendly New Yorker who works in the financial services industry!
Contrast this with people in the Midwest and California, as well as Brits and Aussies. All of these people tend to be far, far more reasonable than the New Yorkers.
Yes, I have clients in Ohio, NC, and Atlanta that are very demanding, and difficult to deal with. While my Customer in CA, are great and I enjoy working with.
Having worked in NY, SF and LA I didn't really find a difference between them. People in those fast-moving, competitive cities all work hard and demand a lot of themselves and others. Though now I work closely with coworkers all over the US and I notice those in less traditionally competitive cities like Cincy, Denver, Indy, etc. are a little less aggressive or in-your-face about it. They work long hours if needed, but they don't jump at the opportunity to and don't make a fuss of it, whereas I find people in big cities are always gunning for the next promotion and they're the first ones to create that work requiring long hours. Just an observation.
