I'm self employed. When I am at work, I work hard, because the faster I work, the faster I get done, the faster I get home, where I can do what I want.

And since I am on contract, no matter how long I work, I get paid the same amount. So technically -- the faster I work the more I get paid per hour.

For me it depends on the day.

When I'm totally in the zone, I'll finish my work in 4-5 hours and then spend the remaining 3-4 looking for things to do to finish out the day. Sometimes I find things, sometimes I don't.

On days when I'm tired or unfocused, it'll be all I can do to get my work done in 8 hours. Some days I do, other days I don't.

And even moreso, there are days when I'm just really, really busy AND in the zone and get more done in 8 hours than I do all week.

Each day is different.

Depends upon the job...

8 hrs of physical labor is almost not do-able... so that wouldn't be 8 hrs of work but some breaks.

An office job, probably 90-95% of the worktime is doable unless its all done. Many people will let their eyes rest, spiratically

I work 10-12 hours...I'm at my store or running errands for the store 8.5 hours a day. Then at home I do computer work. Out of the 10 hours I work at a minimum every day, at least 9 is working or work related. I work through breakfast, lunch, and sometimes dinner.

I work at a non-profit. You get penalized for working hard.
I have a matrix formulated, that if I have to do the job of someone who gets paid more than I do, I stop working for the amount of time it takes me to reach their pay. Ex: if if they make 36 an hour, and it takes me an hour to do their job, I don't work for another hour to make it so Im paid 36 for an hour myself. This racks up free-time pretty fast.

So how many hours would you say you work in a standard 8 hour day? Do you consider yourself to be effective and/or efficient?
I do. From the moment my kids are up I am on my feet taking care of them, taking my son to school, go home taking care of my little one. I get to sit down and relax round 8:30 pm every night, sometimes even after 9. Until then I am juggling taking care of my kids, going to school, study, making dinners, breakfast, laundry, cleaning, lunches....you know..all these things SAHM have to deal with.
SO yea, I work 14 hours..straight.

Not I. That's a fast track to unemployment in my line of work. I'm usually at my computer working for about 7.5 hours of the day so I rounded up and chose 8 which does not include my 1 hour for lunch but does include my 2 15 minute breaks.
