Hello I am interested in becoming an Uber driver, or Lyft driver in either Orange County, or Los Angeles, I am guessing which ever one has more traffic. I did the google search for each but have not signed on because I want to do this when I buy a new car, which I am currently working on.

I have about 7k to buy a car, the thing is I decided to go back to school for HVAC, which will take 2 years if I go full time, and I figured I can do this job Friday through Sunday since it says that you pick your own hours.

So I guess I would like to know how this taxi, Uber, Lyft thing works, for anyone with experience. Is it a good job? Also I know they have food service delivery, how does that work? After I sign up to one of these websites how do you know when you got hired? How I said I did not register with any site yet because I want to have my car first, which will be ASAP, when I find the right car to purchase. Thank you, hope you guys can help.

Many people drive for both. So you don't have to choose. The app tells you everything you need.

Can you or anyone else give me a summary of what the process is like? How I said I did not register my information so I dont have that information of how it works.

What does the app tell you, how do you report your hours, can you get fired? Just somebodies experience dealing or working with these taxi services. All info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again.

Lyft is better from what I heard most drivers confess.

Neither.

Both of those companies are researching the self driving cars. You're basically working for your obsolescence.

The question is, how far away are we from self-driving cars becoming mainstream? My guess is several years, maybe a decade or more.

In the meantime...

Can we stay on topic, this is a serious question for a side job and doing college too. If you pick your own hours, this would be an ideal job to me. I just want as much info as possible. I did read in a forum that 4 doors are required. Thanks.

The process is easy. You just sign up, provide your information, pass an inspection for your car that needs to have 4 doors and be less than 10 years old. Then they send you an email you are approved. And you just turn on the app and start getting requests. You can get disabled if your rating drops below the average for your area. You can probably find YouTube videos.

"you might become obsolete sometime in the next 5 years, so don't work for either company now"
