As it is it's considered a big no-no for employees to talk and tell each other how much each other makes. But what if it wasn't? If employees were freely able to discuss how much they were all making per hour or salary and everyone knew what everyone else was making, what would happen?
Maybe. Or there would be so much discontent that the workplace would become dysfunctional.
You see that in places where salaries are known like teaching. People pretty much know what X is being paid and there is constant complaining by people lower on the scale.

Employees are able to talk about salaries. It's not illegal. It's just no advised.
Long term things would be more equal. Short term, it would be opening a hornet's nest. Imagine being the person making 10k+ a year to do the same work as those sitting next to you?
Definitely discontent in the work place. People who makes less than the next would feel discouraged, cheated, etc.
Although I am considered a "mid-level" manager, I make very close or maybe a bit more than some "senior" managers at my company. If I was in their shoes and knew about this, I'd definitely feel unfair.
As for "equality" - that goes both ways. It would be a benefit if your salary would lean more towards the high water mark. But reality dictates it would be the opposite. So not exactly the answer people are looking for.

Some would quit, some would slow down, some would walk around with a "Superior" attitude...
Me, I'd be trying more to "Spread the work" (Hopefully having enough people) and let the chips fall where they may.
I'll admit, I found out that my position paid the highest (Except for Asset Protection) in the store as a "Beginning" wage. The people who chuck freight, apparel, Pharmacy, grocery were about $1 below my wage...The freight chuckers move 6 tons a night on average, but make min....Not a nice thing....I don't mind paying more for my food....if it means they get a fair rate...
There should be discontent. Employees are complete IDIOTS today. They are exploited, worked to death, taken advantage of while the jack offs at the top run away to the bank while everyone just sits there and watches it happen.
There needs to be a revolution in the workplace today. Workers need to unite again and quit being taken advantage of
