If you were to start a small business, what would it be?
I am one of those people who is constantly thinking of small business ideas, but haven't yet gone through with any of them. They include:
* Tutoring (as I have an academic background, it's natural)
* Cleaning service
* Knitwear (my wife is a master knitter, though this would obviously be very small)
...and many others.
I love teaching so I often think about tutoring or teach a class in a community college. I wouldn't give up my current job for teaching though. That would be something after retirement for fun or if I have free time. I love working with people so its a good way to make new friends & socialize. I also thought about import, export. I am an immigrant & there is so much creativity in clothes, jewelry in India so I often think about importing some stuff here & selling it online. I am not business minded at all & I hate doing taxes & paperwork so I am more comfortable working for someone else where I have minimum paperwork so teaching would be my first priority.
My mother did tutoring (with multiple masters degrees in education, reading specialties, and learning disabilities) She was making $50 an hour, when $50 was a lot of money, and she had to turn away students.
Sewer unclogging makes good money and doesn't require a lot of start-up money.
My son bought a dump truck and worked as an independent and made $85 an hour.
A lady down the road raises alpacas and sells fleece and spun yarn.
I know a guy who makes bird proof chicken feeders and incubators and does well with it.
One of these days, I'm going to make myself a solar food dehydrator. I think those would sell well to the homesteading crowd.
I read an article that stated (tongue-in-cheek) that you could become a millionaire selling flip-flops and tacos in LA, and for the riskier, weed out the back. Huge profit margins and demand on all three.

Home health care. I think it would be hard finding good help though, especially since the wages are hard to live on. Such is the case for many of today's grunt level, yet vital roles.
While life ain't pretty in the trenches, it isn't always so great for the actual small business owners. Most of the ones I have worked for are getting by... On paper. The profitable ones are being rewarded for previous capital investment. So what are they doing today? Repeating the same behavior and investing, all in the name of remaining competitive. The problem is, this leaves them with about 80-100K for a small entrepreneurial concern. That's an awful lot of risk for an upper middle class income. This is all relative to industry of course.
