I never thought I would actually consider this but here I am! I will be graduating college soon with a degree in economics. Currently I have no jobs lined up after graduation and I'm considering joining the military as a last resort.
My goal is to eventually go back to school to get a Master of accounting or something, and then work professionally in the field of business. I don't want to go back to school right away because I do want to gain some experience.
The reason that I'm considering joining the military is that I think it will help me grow as a person in many ways, and train me to become more self-reliant.
And the reason that I'm considering Air Force over other branches is that I don't think I can handle the physical challenges of Army or Marines. I'm not a typical tough guy…I barely played any sports in high school…In short, I'm weak and non-atheltic.
I did some research online and found out that the Air Force might be suitable for me. I have no desire to be a pilot (my eyesight sucks anyway), but I do want the military experience and the growth that I'll get from it. I would hope after serving my time I would be a better person and be more ready for whatever challenges that come ahead.
Has anyone experienced similar things like this? Can anyone offer any advice on this? Who should I talk to if I want to dive in further with this? Thanks!

Hi, I'm an officer in the Reserves and I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. I started off as enlisted and now am a commissioned officer, so I have experience on both sides.
What kind of jobs are you interested in? What is your personality like? Have you done any internships? I may be able to offer some sudgestions based off this.
I hear the air force is nice.
My friend who was joining a while ago said the other branches called it the girl scouts.
I've heard of some people with college degrees also joining as enlisted, not officers. Easier to get in as enlisted, I think.
You can still be a pilot if you fly a drone, with poorer eyesight. Cuz you're looking at a screen.
Somethings you could also do is do volunteer work to get experience instead of the military.
The military would probably be better as you would be paid as well as getting experience.
Generally speaking, yes, especially if you're trying to get in with a degree/have the skills and know-how to ace the ASVAB, etc. I took the ASVAB back in high school, but ended up going the officer route later in life.
The military would be your best bet, because you will get excellent experience, which will help you get your foot into other doors, should you decide not to stay in. You might like the Coast Guard as well - they save lives... USCG: Careers
You may also want to try the FBI, GAO, and Department of State.
I would recommend that you find a MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) or commissioned officer branch that goes with your interests and also your degree if possible. Use your time in the military to develop your resume and also to do something you enjoy. If you do something dissimilar it could be more difficult to get a job when you get out.
Alternately you could consider joining the Peace Corps. They will pay off your student loans and give you some experience in international development. That ties in with your economics degree. That's what my cousin is doing right now.

You won't get a commission with a degree in Economics I'm sorry to say, and being a pilot won't come into play. If a commission is what you are after, you may want to consider going on to graduate school and pursuing an MBA at a university that offers ROTC. That would be your best bet.
Joining as an enlisted member could work out well for you though. There are many AFSCs in Finance that you would no doubt be qualified for (depending upon your ASVAB scores) and you would come out of Basic Training as an E-3 due to your amount of education. You could easily pursue a Masters after joining as most typical AF office jobs are 9-5 and allow for night school. They also offer tuition assistance, and after the AF you would be qualified for the GI Bill which is well worth the investment.

Because AF OTS is highly competitive, and the best route to an AF commission will always be through an ROTC program or the AF Academy. Even ROTC graduates are not guaranteed an active duty commission. Short of that, you better have a degree they have a huge need for such as engineering, medical or some other technical field. The AF does not commission kids that get the idea they want to be an officer at the last hour of their degree program. They want dedicated people that are sure to succeed in a very demanding position.
