I will never understand why our society feels that discussions about pay have to be so secretive and an unspoken topic. Why all the hush hush? Ask someone what they make and they give you a look of horror. It's considered one of the most rude things to do. WHY? I talk openly about my pay and I couldn't give a damn, whether it's terrible or great. Public employees have all their salaries posted online and the positions advertise exactly what the payrange and pay scales are. Why the heck can't we talk about pay more openly?

What they don't know can't hurt you.
Employers have a stake in it, because it prevents employees from getting upset over perceived imbalances in pay if they find out their co-worker makes more than them.
The general public probably just doesn't want to be judged by how much or how little they make. Those who don't make much may feel inadequate. Those who make a lot may feel like their friends/family will be jealous or that they will expect to lend them money when in need.
I'm kind of like you, I'm fairly open about my pay at this point in my life. Early on in my career, when I didn't make much, I was more discreet. I don't make a ton, but it offers a stable livelihood for the most part.
Why do you need to know what other people make?
It really is none of your business.
They are probably shocked that you think it IS your business.
Most people: "Oh, we're struggling so hard right now financially... We never have enough money... Everything is so hard."
Me: "How much money do you guys make?"
For people who don't want to disclose what they make, there SURE are a LOT of people who love to complain about MONEY.

Internally within a company and even amongst strangers on an Internet Forum, the main reason is because it creates strife.
People who don't deserve to make more ... make more, in some cases a lot more.
A lot of people do care what you make. Have you ever been on Match.com?
But anyway, you're right. I really don't care as much anymore. I used to get really upset when these kids used to post, "I'm 24 years old and I ONLY make $80,000 a year."
But whatever, money means nothing as long as you have enough for to live your life. And I don't make a lot, but I do.
Honestly, I probably don't even care if somebody in my company's same division who is steps lower than me makes more than me anymore. Happiness and a fulfilling life is not based on salary.

Their complaints do not entitle you to know their financial particulars.

Even the posters that agree with the OP demonstrate some of the reasons why.
It's like running with scissors...great fun as long as you make more than every one you THINK you should out-earn...then you find out that the lazy no-skill jerk sitting beside you who just started 6 months ago makes MORE, by a LOT!
What do you do then? Go whining to your boss because THAT guy out-negotiated you or knew someone or b1ew someone or whatever? I'm not sure how that helps anyone. Much more instructive to read salary surveys so you have an idea if your COMPANY is under-paying your position - then it's not a personal thing that just eats at you.
