New to the forum, I looked around and couldn't find a similar topic. Hope this isn't redundant.
I've been searching for jobs that use the skill set of data science, machine learning, analytics, etc. in a humanitarian/environmental field and I really can't seem to find anything. Basically, I have a background in industrial engineering and operations research. I'm starting a master's in computer science very soon to further dive into more advanced techniques such as machine learning and artificial intelligence. I've worked for 4 years as a logistics engineering and have gotten very good at developing practical, user friendly methods of making planning decisions for freight optimization. From a tools/strategy perspective I like the work, but it is extremely unfulfilling because the final output is just cost savings for huge companies that already have a lot of money. I specialize in resource allocation/optimal policy problem solving and I want to apply those skills to an organization such as the Peace Corps or UNICEF to maximize human progress in the direction of reversing the damage to the environment, developing policies that combat global poverty, or promoting equality. I'm fine with making much, much less than I do now but I can't do pure volunteer work. Is there a middle ground? Is it possible to stay in the Chicago area with a job like that (I'm aware of UN computer science jobs in Manhattan but might not be able to relocate)?
