So I've been reassigned to another unit for a bit.
This unit is one in which we, as workers, are screamed at, cursed out, called all kinds of bad names, etc by disgruntled parents - and we have to take it! I've seen workers run out in tears, 'cause it's broken them.
My Area Director, along with my bosses, told me: MANDATORY therapy - no ifs, ands, or buts - and if/when anyone becomes confrontational, I'll just have to hold my heat in. Modified duty, coupled with intense therapy. This was a written stipulation, meaning if violated...I'm finished.
Somebody mentioned to me: Mark Gastineau had the same problem with his temper....and look where he is now! Not that I'd be in prison, but whatever I gotta do to keep my pension! I'm too old for drama.
Well, without specifics, it's hard to give any advice.
But, I used to work with lawyers, and I was thinking about what they might say. Think in terms of what might be said in court about what you said or how you reacted.
So, if you only ever stood there and didn't say anything, or only said something banal like, " I hear what your'e saying" and said that over and over 100 times no matter what they were doing or saying - you could hardly get in trouble for it, and it might actually be kind of funny. Yet, what could anyone ever say you did wrong?
Crazy parent: "You're not listening to me! You don't care what I say!"
You: "I hear what you're saying"
Long pause.
Crazy parent: "is that it? What are you going to do about this???"
You: "I hear what you're saying"
Crazy parent: "You SOB! That doesn't mean anything! I want to talk to your supervisor!"
You: "I hear what you're saying"
And you call your supervisor.... who then has to deal with them LOL.
And when asked what you said to them, they say, he just kept saying I hear what you're saying! And when they ask you what you said, you say, "I wanted them to feel they were being listened to, so I said, "I hear what you're saying."
How can they fire you over that?
I think you can find a way to keep your pension, and not lose your job. You just have to be smarter than them in how you deal with their attempt to get you to screw up bad enough to fire you before you can get your pension. Think of it as a game that you can win. And you can :-)

Stop causing drama, and you will not have any. I am delighted therapy is mandatory. I hope it helps you.
It's pretty simple really. The conversation would go something like this:
Rick, about that time that parent got really irate. We sent you to therapy to give you coping skills and the ability to defuse situations. It was obvious to everybody that your repeated response was simple a passive-aggressive answer, that only made the parent even more angry, which required my intervention. So I have a very simple thing to say to you. You're fired. Do you hear what I am saying?

Rick responds: Where's my cake, b*tch?
When such cake isn't produced. Rick takes the boss outside and punches her repeatedly. Now, if the boss is a man, Rick might shake a fist (nonagressively) and ask them to step outside. If it's a woman, there will be violence and then the women will be accused of flirting because of some vague signal she was giving Rick in his opinion. Anyway, it ends with Rick being escorted out possibly by police.

Given the subject matter, a smiley face emoticon would be in bad taste. I do appreciate your response though.

The funny thing is, I bet half of the office is probably terrified of this guy. Rick is the one wondering why everyone is acting that way towards him. Maybe funnier is how "tough" he is, I bet any guy what's in decent shape he doesn't mouth off. I.e. He's the typical bully. Going around bother those he knows won't fight back and now that something has happened to him, he's shocked and appalled. I wanted to believe he was a troll, but he truly sounds like his exploits are real.
Rick, if you are reading this, (in all seriousness) they are probably trying to push you out due to your poor behavior towards others. I would take your pension and run because in a matter of time you might not have that option. I'm guessing they're looking to fire you for December, because it's easiest (paperwork wise) to fire people at the end of the year.

This has definitely crossed my mind. I'm gonna speak with my union also.
